The impact of violent films on children’s behavior is a complex and well-researched topic. Here’s a summary of key findings:
Potential Negative Impacts:

  • Increased Aggression:
  • Studies have shown a correlation between exposure to violent media and increased aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in children.
  • Children may imitate the violence they see on screen, especially if the violence is portrayed as justified or without consequences.
  • Desensitization to Violence:
  • Repeated exposure to violent images can lead to desensitization, where children become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others.
  • This can make them more accepting of violence in real life.
  • Increased Fear and Anxiety:
  • Violent films can frighten children and cause anxiety, nightmares, and fear of becoming a victim.
  • This is especially true for younger children who may have difficulty distinguishing between fantasy and reality.
  • Changes in Attitudes and Beliefs:
  • Exposure to violence can shape children’s attitudes and beliefs about violence, leading them to believe that violence is a normal or acceptable way to solve problems.
  • Behavioral changes:
  • It can lead to an increase in defiant behavior, and a decrease in prosocial behaviors.
    Factors Influencing Impact:
  • Age and Developmental Stage: Younger children are more vulnerable to the effects of violent media.
  • Individual Differences: Some children are more susceptible to the influence of violent media than others.
  • Context of Viewing: The way violence is portrayed (e.g., glorified, punished) and the presence of parental mediation can influence its impact.
  • Home Environment: A child’s home environment, including exposure to real-life violence, can also play a role.
    Key Considerations:
  • It’s important to note that media violence is not the sole cause of aggressive behavior. Many other factors, such as family, peers, and social environment, also contribute.
  • Parental involvement and guidance are crucial in mitigating the negative effects of violent media.
