Mumbai Indians’ cricketers Kieron Pollard and Tim David have found themselves in hot water after being penalized for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct during their team’s clash against Punjab Kings at the PCA New International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on April 18.

The match garnered attention for all the wrong reasons when a viral video surfaced, allegedly showing members of the Mumbai Indians squad and support staff in the dugout engaging in what appeared to be illegal assistance to batter Suryakumar Yadav in seeking a review.
In the 15th over of MI’s innings, an incident unfolded that caught the eye of both spectators and cricket officials alike. Arshdeep Singh delivered a ball that, despite being full and way outside off-stump, was deemed legal by the umpire. Suryakumar Yadav, batting at 67 off 47 deliveries at the time, attempted to play the ball. However, the camera panned to the MI dugout, where head coach Mark Boucher was seen indicating to Suryakumar that the delivery was wide. Notably, Tim David, alongside batting coach Kieron Pollard, was observed urging the batter to request a review, signaling with the ‘T’ gesture, as reported by Wisden.
Wisden pointed out that Article 2.15 (b) of the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials expressly prohibits a player on the field from seeking assistance from any off-field individual in deciding whether to request a referral to the TV Umpire.
Penalties Issued and Acceptance of Sanctions
Following a thorough investigation, David and Kieron Pollard were found to have violated the IPL’s Code of Conduct, constituting a Level 1 offence. As a result, both cricketers have been fined 20 per cent of their respective match fees. Importantly, both players admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanctions.
It’s worth noting that for Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is considered final and binding, bringing a close to the disciplinary process pertaining to this particular incident.
