After a year-long protest, farmers at Delhi’s borders began heading home on Saturday. In the midst of packing up and dismantling their protest sites, the farmers danced, prayed and distributed langar in celebration.

After more than a year of protesting at Delhi’s borders, farmers’ unions called off their agitation on Thursday once the Centre accepted their demands on issues including a panel for legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP), withdrawal of cases against the farmers and compensation to the families of those who lost their lives during the protest

On Saturday, the farmers from Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh began their long journey back home. In the midst of packing up and dismantling the protest sites they have occupied since November 2020, the farmers danced, prayed and distributed langar.

The farmers had initially gathered at Delhi’s borders in November 2020 to protest against the Centre’s three farm laws and demand their withdrawal. The laws were repealed by Parliament earlier this month.

SINGHU BORDER

At the Singhu border, a large convoy of tractor trolleys started returning to Punjab and Haryana in the morning after performing ‘ardas’ (prayer).

The tractor trolleys were bedecked with flowers and played ‘victory songs’ on their sound systems. Before bidding farewell to Singhu, some farmers performed havans and sang kirtans, and some danced to ‘bhangra’ songs.
