Droupadi

Zoologists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have recently unearthed a remarkable addition to marine biodiversity – a new species of sea slug dwelling in the coastal waters of eastern India. Dubbed Melanochlamys Droupadi, the marine slug is characterized by its brownish-black hue adorned with a striking ruby red spot, reaching a maximum length of up to seven millimetres. This intriguing discovery not only adds a unique specimen to the global sea slug catalogue but also pays homage to Indian President Droupadi Murmu, after whom the species is named.

Exploration Along the Eastern Coast Unveils Novelty

The researchers conducted their investigation along a 3km stretch from the low intertidal zones of India’s eastern districts, specifically the eastern states of West Bengal and Odisha. Nearly 150 specimens were meticulously collected from the north-eastern coast of the Bay of Bengal, leading to a comprehensive molecular analysis that confirmed the distinct status of the Melanochlamys Droupadi. This newfound head-shield sea slug, characterized by its hermaphroditic nature, with both male and female reproductive parts, is equipped with a shell inside its body.

Melanochlamys Droupadi : A Tribute to Presidential Ascension

The lead author of the study, Prasad Chandra Tudu from ZSI, shares a hometown with President Droupadi Murmu. Drawing a personal connection to the discovery, Dr Tudu expressed, “As scientists, we have the freedom to name species which we discover. Since both the president and I come from the Rairangpur area of Mayurbhanj, I decided to name the species after her to honour her ascension to the high office.” This naming convention reflects the freedom scientists have in designating names to newly discovered species.

This revelation marks the second species from the Indian region and only the third true tropical species globally among sea slugs. The Melanochlamys Droupadi joins the diverse array of sea slugs that inhabit marine environments worldwide, showcasing the intricate biodiversity present in the coastal waters of eastern India. The findings, documented in the journal Mollusca Research, stand as a testament to the ongoing exploration of our planet’s rich and varied ecosystems.
