hydrogen train

Indian Railways has announced plans to run 35 hydrogen trains as part of its ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ initiative, with the aim of reducing carbon emissions and adopting a greener approach.
The Hydrogen for Heritage project aims to revolutionize the rail industry by adding hydrogen fuel cells as an alternative to diesel engines. The project also promotes clean energy sources to reduce harmful pollution.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the development in a written reply to a Rajya Sabha question, noting that the first prototype train is undergoing field trials on the Jind-Sonipat section of the Northern Railway.
The project was initially estimated at Rs 80 crore per train and Rs 70 crore per ground infrastructure route. The project is a major investment in sustainable transport. Vaishnaw further revealed that the Indian Railways has funded a pilot project worth Rs 111.83 crore for retrofitting a hydrogen fuel cell to an existing Diesel Power Unit (DEMU) in addition to associated ground infrastructure. This pilot project is planned to operate on the Jind-Sonipat section of the Northern Railway. Although the initial operating costs of these hydrogen-powered trains are expected to be expensive, as the number of alternative-fueled trains increases, the projected costs will decrease.
Adoption of hydrogen as a fuel source not only offers significant benefits in the area of green transportation technology, but also aligns with India’s carbon-free goals.
Using hydrogen fuel cells instead of diesel engines, these trains produce no carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides or particulate matter, making them a much more environmentally friendly option. The introduction of hydrogen-electric trains paves the way to a cleaner and greener future.
Indian Railways has firmly adhered to sustainable practices with a focus on achieving 100% electrification. The introduction of hydrogen-powered trains will significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
With trials scheduled to begin in March 2024, Northern Railway general manager Shobhan Chaudhry confirmed the schedule and says the initiative is progressing well. Early in the project, the success of this pilot could potentially revolutionize the entire rail sector and inspire other industries to seek similar clean energy solutions.
With the ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ initiative, Indian Railways is taking a big step towards adopting innovative and eco-friendly technologies. By introducing hydrogen fuel cells, railways are not only promoting a greener environment, but are also setting a precedent for sustainable transportation across the country. Indian Railways’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions also underlines the government’s determination to build a cleaner and greener future for future generations.
With the introduction of hydrogen fueled trains, the Indian railway network has the potential to become a role model for environmentally conscious transport worldwide and take significant steps towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
