Red Cross

Every year on May 8th, the global community comes together to commemorate World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, a day dedicated to honouring the humanitarian efforts of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. This annual observance serves as a reminder of the fundamental principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality that guide the work of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies worldwide.

History of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day

World RedCross and Red Crescent Day commemorates the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International RedCross and Red Crescent Movement. Inspired by the suffering he witnessed on the battlefield of Solferino in 1859, Dunant dedicated his life to alleviating the plight of war victims and promoting humanitarian action. His efforts led to the establishment of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the adoption of the Geneva Conventions, which set the standards for the treatment of wounded and sick combatants and civilians during armed conflicts.
